February 17, 2025
MACOMB, IL - - 91²Ö¿â has been rated as a Research Institution by the . The new Research designation puts 91²Ö¿âamong the top 15% of the 4,000 rated institutions nationally.
"We are very pleased with the new research activity designation from Carnegie," said 91²Ö¿âPresident Kristi Mindrup. "The recognition as a Research Institution reflects Western's distinctiveness and demonstrates the quality of the education students experience at WIU."
Since 1970, the Carnegie classification has been a standardized method to compare research activity across a diverse spectrum of higher education institutions. Prior to being rated as a Research Institution, 91²Ö¿âwas rated as a Master's institution. As these ratings are updated every three years, the previous designation did not fully reflect the impact of research activity at WIU.
"Being recognized with a Research designation positions our institution for further funding and elevates the profile of 91²Ö¿â," Mindrup said. "The opportunities for 91²Ö¿âstudents are tremendous and this national recognition confirms Western is on the right path."
"WIU's contributions through educational advancement and the work our programs produce is substantial and far reaching. This new designation from Carnegie proves the value 91²Ö¿âbrings to local and national research activities," 91²Ö¿âProvost Mark Mossman said. "While teaching and service are the central focus of WIU, it is meaningful to have the important research work we do to be recognized. The new rating is testament to the talented faculty and engaged students at our institution."
